Three Metaphors for Spiritual Formation

I’m beginning to work on a project that is tentatively called “The Journey: Finding Your Way for a Life in GodThe following three images are the three metaphors from which I will draw throughout the course. It will be an eight-session course, designed to allow individuals to take first steps in an intentional faith walk in the life of a congregation. My intention is to have this available online so that anyone can use it. The material for the course is drawn from my research at deepintheburbs.com

Let me know if you would like updates on the progress.

The Virtual Life of Internet
The internet is a flat network of shared community. God is the operating system, Jesus is the physical infrastructure through which data flows, and the Spirit is the interconnectivity that allows us access.
The Sailing Voyage
We are a crew of sailors, setting out to the open sea. The Spirit is the wind that powers us, Jesus is the North Star that guides us, and the Father is the ground that holds the sea itself. The destination is the infinite heart of God’s love.
The Vine
Jesus said that the Father is the gardener, he is the vine, and we are the branches. The Spirit is the air, sunlight, and water. The fruit is love. We are invited to remain in the vine so that the Spirit can produce fruit through us.
